DIY Triathlon
Create Your Own Challenging Adventure
Choose 3 Sports of Your Own!
If you're craving an exciting, physically challenging, and fun way to spend your day with your partner (or friends!), then a DIY Triathlon is the perfect solution! This is all about crafting your own triathlon-style adventure by selecting three different sports or activities that you both enjoy or want to try out. Whether you’re aiming for an intense workout or just a playful competition, this experience promises to be a memorable and rewarding challenge. So, let’s get creative, and I’ll guide you through how to plan, prepare, and fully enjoy your own DIY Triathlon.
Here’s How To Do It
Step 1: Choose Your 3 Sports
A traditional triathlon consists of swimming, cycling, and running, but your DIY version can be as creative and fun as you like. The key here is picking three activities that you’ll both enjoy and be able to complete in one day. You can either opt for physically demanding sports or keep it more laid-back depending on your mood and fitness levels.
Here are a few ideas for each segment:
1. Water-Based Sports (Swimming, Kayaking, Surfing, Paddleboarding)
Swimming: If you have access to a pool or a safe lake/river, swimming is a great way to start your DIY triathlon. Swim laps or race each other across a designated distance.
Kayaking: Take it to the water with a kayaking challenge. This is especially fun in areas with beautiful rivers or lakes.
Paddleboarding: If you’re near the ocean, lake, or river, paddleboarding offers a good full-body workout with an added sense of calm and adventure.
Snorkeling: A more laid-back option but still very fun if you’re by the water. Explore underwater with your partner while getting some light exercise.
2. Land-Based Sports (Running, Cycling, Rollerblading, Hiking)
Running: A classic in any triathlon! You can plan your route ahead of time, whether it's around your neighborhood, in a park, or on trails.
Cycling: A bike ride through your local area, along scenic paths, or even a mountain biking trail will offer a thrilling and challenging experience.
Rollerblading/Skating: Grab some rollerblades or skateboards and race down a smooth path or skating rink. It’s a fun and slightly different alternative to running.
Hiking: If you're up for a more adventurous and scenic challenge, hiking up a local trail is a fantastic option. Choose a trail with a decent incline for an extra burn!
3. Fun & Active Sports (Yoga, Obstacle Course, Dance, Rock Climbing)
Yoga: If you want to add flexibility and balance into your triathlon, do a yoga session after completing a physically demanding activity. Set up a peaceful spot outdoors or at home and guide each other through different poses.
Obstacle Course: Get creative by setting up an obstacle course in your backyard or at a local park. You can use tires, cones, ropes, and other outdoor objects to create challenges.
Dance: If you're into dancing, include a dance session in your triathlon. You can create a little “dance-off” or go through a choreographed routine together.
Rock Climbing: A rock-climbing wall or outdoor rock climbing experience can be a thrilling and challenging sport to complete as part of your triathlon.
Step 2: Plan the Order and Timing of Your Sports
Once you’ve selected your sports, you’ll need to decide the order in which you’ll complete them. Typically, triathlons go swimming, cycling, and then running, but for your DIY version, you can customize this depending on your preferences and accessibility to locations.
Tips for Planning:
Balance intensity: Try not to schedule all of your most strenuous activities in a row. For example, if you plan to run, cycle, and do yoga, keep the yoga last for a more relaxing finish.
Location: Choose sports that are close together or easy to transition between. For example, a run followed by a bike ride is easy if you’re doing it in the neighborhood, but it might be difficult if one activity requires traveling far.
Timing: Set realistic goals for each activity. Depending on the sports you select, time yourself for each segment or choose distances to complete. You can either set a time goal (e.g., 30 minutes of swimming) or distance goal (e.g., 5-mile bike ride).
Step 3: Gear Up & Prepare for Your Triathlon
Now that you’ve chosen your activities and set up a route or location, it’s time to get the right gear for each sport. Don’t stress too much about expensive equipment—use what you already have, and improvise where needed!
Gear Suggestions:
Swimming: Swimsuits, goggles, swim cap (if you like), towel, sunscreen if swimming outdoors.
Cycling: Bike, helmet, water bottle, comfortable clothes, and sneakers. If you're cycling on uneven terrain, consider wearing padded shorts.
Running: Comfortable running shoes, athletic wear, water bottle, and a fitness tracker (optional).
Hiking: Comfortable hiking boots, backpack with snacks and water, weather-appropriate clothing, and sunscreen.
Yoga/Obstacle Course: Mat for yoga, comfortable clothes, and obstacle course equipment (cones, ropes, etc. if needed).
Snack and Hydration:
Plan for breaks between activities to stay hydrated and fueled. Have water, sports drinks, and energy snacks (like granola bars, fruit, or protein-packed treats) ready to go.
If you’re doing more than one activity, take a 10-15 minute break in between each to recover, hydrate, and reset your energy.
Step 4: Let the DIY Triathlon Begin!
How to do it:
Set goals for each activity: Whether you’re racing against each other or simply enjoying the experience, set goals for each activity. For example, you can challenge each other to a certain time or try to beat your previous records.
Transition moments: Take some time between sports to transition to the next activity, whether that’s taking off your swimsuit and putting on your cycling gear or changing into comfy running clothes. These moments also give you a chance to reflect on each part of the triathlon and cheer each other on.
Make it a friendly competition or teamwork: Depending on your vibe, you can either compete with each other (e.g., first to finish each activity wins) or complete each activity as a team, supporting one another through the challenges.
Why it’s special: Not only is the DIY Triathlon physically rewarding, but it also gives you both the chance to bond, push each other to new limits, and enjoy your time together.
Step 5: Celebrate Your Achievement
Once you’ve completed your DIY triathlon, it’s time to celebrate! You've worked hard and made lasting memories. Take a moment to appreciate the accomplishment, no matter the time it took to finish.
How to celebrate:
Take photos: Document the experience with some celebratory photos. Snap a picture at the finish line (even if it’s just your backyard) or a group photo after completing all three activities.
Cool down and relax: Finish with a stretch, yoga, or relaxation time together. Consider soaking in a bubble bath or relaxing in the sun after the physical exertion.
Treat yourself: Indulge in a celebratory meal or your favorite treats. You could enjoy a nice meal at a restaurant, order in pizza, or make a fun dessert to mark the occasion.
Share your experience: Whether you’re sharing on social media or chatting with friends afterward, recount the day’s highlights and challenges.
