DIY Bookmark Making & Book Binding Day

Create a Beautiful Shelf of Personalized Literary Keepsakes

Imagine spending a day crafting beautiful bookmarks, binding your own books, and then curating a scenic shelf full of your creative masterpieces. Not only does this project allow you to tap into your inner artist, but it also gives you a chance to add a personal, cozy touch to your home.

Whether you’re an avid reader or just enjoy creating things with your hands, this DIY day is all about slowing down, crafting meaningful objects, and putting them on display for your enjoyment.

Setting the Scene: A Cozy, Literary Craft-Filled Day

To make the experience even more enjoyable, create a cozy crafting space where you can relax and get lost in the creative process. Consider the following elements for a perfect day:

  • Music: Playlist Here

  • Snacks: Make Little Snacks Inspired from the Books you’ll be Crafting

  • Ambiance: Put on a Movie Adaptation from a Book You’ve Read. A little Harry Potter or Perks of Being A Wallflower on in the Background

1. Bookmark Making: Personalize Your Reading Journey

Start the day by designing your own bookmarks! Bookmarks are a great way to add personal flair to your reading materials while also expressing creativity. The process is simple but allows you to explore different design techniques and styles.

Materials Needed:

  • Cardstock or sturdy paper (at least 3 x 6 inches in size)

  • Markers, colored pencils, or paint (whatever your preferred medium is)

  • Rubber stamps and ink pads

  • Washi tape, stickers, or fabric (optional for added texture)

  • Scissors and a hole punch (for adding a tassel)

  • Tassels or ribbon (for decoration)

Step-by-Step:

  1. Cut Your Paper: Start by cutting your cardstock or paper into bookmark-sized pieces (usually around 2 inches wide by 6 inches long).

  2. Design Your Bookmarks: Use your favorite drawing tools to design each bookmark. You can go for minimalist geometric shapes, hand-drawn illustrations, inspirational quotes, or nature-inspired themes. This is your chance to get creative!

  3. Add Texture and Detail: Enhance your designs with rubber stamps, washi tape, or fabric scraps. These can give your bookmarks added texture and uniqueness. Consider using bright colors or metallic pens for accents.

  4. Finish with Tassels: Once you’re satisfied with the design, use a hole punch at the top of each bookmark and thread a small ribbon or tassel through the hole to add a cute finishing touch.

  5. Dry and Set Aside: Let the bookmarks dry completely if you’ve used any paint or ink.

2. Bookbinding: Craft Your Own Little Journals or Notebooks

Next up, try your hand at bookbinding! This is a relaxing and satisfying craft that allows you to create custom notebooks or journals for your thoughts, sketches, or even as gifts. Whether you’re new to bookbinding or have tried it before, this is a fun way to add a handmade touch to your creative space.

Materials You Will Need:

  • Book to rebind

  • New cover material (fabric, paper, or other sturdy materials)

  • Scissors

  • Craft glue (or bookbinding glue)

  • Bone folder or similar tool (for smoothing edges)

  • Thread and needle (if stitching is needed)

  • Ruler

  • Pencil

  • Craft knife or X-Acto knife

  • Glue brush or sponge (optional)

  • Bookbinding tape (optional)

  • Decorative elements (optional, for design)

  • Binder clips or paperweights (to press the cover while drying)

Step-by-Step:

  1. Disassemble the book: Carefully open the book and gently cut through the stitching or glue that holds the old cover in place. You can use a craft knife or X-Acto knife to carefully cut along the spine.

  2. Separate the pages: After cutting the glue or stitching, carefully remove the old cover from the text block (the pages). If it’s a hardcover book, you may need to remove any protective lining paper (the endpapers) as well.

  3. Measure the new cover: Measure the dimensions of your book (height, width, and spine width). You’ll need to add a bit of extra material (about 1 inch extra on each side) to wrap around the edges of the book.

    • For the front and back cover, cut two pieces of your chosen material (e.g., fabric, cardstock, etc.) to the size you just measured.

    • For the spine, cut a strip that matches the width of the spine, with some extra material for overlap.

  4. Design the cover (optional): If you plan to add artwork, text, or other designs to the cover, do that now before assembling everything. You can print on paper, add decorations, or even hand-paint the design. We’ve included a custom designed template here

  5. Cut the spine piece to the correct size based on your measurements.

  6. Glue the spine to the inside of the cover material: Apply glue to the spine area of the book’s text block, then center the spine piece on the inside cover material. Fold the edges of the cover material over the spine piece and allow the glue to dry for a few minutes.

  7. Fold over the edges: Once the spine is secured, fold the extra material over the top, bottom, and sides of the book cover. Use a bone folder to smooth the folds, ensuring a clean, neat edge.

  8. Align the covers with the text block: Place the text block (the pages of the book) in the center of your cover. Carefully line it up so that the spine and edges are even.

  9. Glue the covers: Apply glue to the inside edges of the cover material (where it will touch the first and last pages of the text block). Press these edges onto the first and last pages of your book, ensuring they are securely adhered.

  10. Press the cover: Use binder clips or paperweights to apply pressure to the edges and spine of the book while it dries. This will help the glue bond properly and avoid any shifting.

  11. If you want to personalize the cover, you can add decorative details such as:

    • Embossing: Use an embossing tool to press designs into the cover material.

    • Labels: Add a custom title, author’s name, or other text using adhesive letters, stencils, or by printing directly onto the cover.

    • Other Decorations: Ribbons, buttons, fabric flowers, or other embellishments can be glued onto the cover for a more creative design.

  12. Let the glue dry: After everything is glued into place, allow the book to dry for several hours or even overnight, ensuring the cover is securely attached.

3. Curate Your Scenic Shelf: A Display of Your Creativity

Now that you’ve created your bookmarks and bound your own books, it’s time to display them! Setting up a scenic shelf not only showcases your craft but also adds a beautiful focal point to your room. The goal here is to create a curated space that highlights your creations while keeping the vibe cozy, inviting, and visually interesting.

Materials Needed:

  • A small shelf (or space on an existing shelf)

  • Small plants, candles, or trinkets for added decor

  • Your homemade bookmarks, books, and maybe a few books you love

  • Decorative trays or bowls (to hold extra bookmarks or tools)

  • Lights or fairy lights for ambiance

Step-by-Step:

  1. Choose the Shelf: Find a space in your home where you’d like to showcase your work. This could be a small floating shelf, a bookshelf, or even a corner of a larger shelf.

  2. Arrange Your Creations: Place your handmade books on the shelf, either standing up like regular books or laying flat as coffee table books. Arrange your bookmarks in a small tray or place them between the pages of the books.

  3. Add Decorative Touches: Add plants, candles, or little trinkets to give the shelf a whimsical, lived-in look. You could also add fairy lights around the shelf for a cozy, warm atmosphere.

  4. Make a Little Nook: Grab a Shoe Box & Create a Little Book Scene to add as Book Weights for your Book Shelf!

  5. Mix in Other Treasures: Consider including other personal items like framed photos, little art pieces, or souvenirs to make the shelf feel like an extension of your personality.

Creative Ideas:

  • Bookmark Swap: If you have friends or family members who enjoy reading, host a bookmark-making swap where you exchange the bookmarks you've made for each other's creations.

  • Bookbinding with a Twist: Try a "theme" for each book you bind—like creating a series of small journals based on different moods (e.g., "Dreams," "Travel Memories," "Daily Thoughts").

  • Upcycled Books: Use upcycled paper, old magazines, or recycled cardboard for a more eco-friendly approach to bookbinding and bookmark making.

  • Seasonal Bookmark Collection: Create a set of bookmarks for different seasons or holidays, and then display them on the shelf according to the time of year.Behind the Scenes: Resources For The Project
